At First Reading
Enigma is a series of paintings and works-on-paper dominated by the saturation and forces of the color red: Vermillion, Cadmiums, Alizarin. Here, the color red is the tool for conviction of purpose and contemplation upon humanity’s tendency for cruelty and indifference.
These paintings look outwardly, like a mirror that assesses our complicity in a sea of political and human cruelty, yet also indicative of the passion and desire to render justice, a desire for redemption, and to live with compassion and mercy.
The works become a modern interpretation of Ancient Mysteries, such as the Eleusinian Sorceress finding the sacred mysteries as a path "to elevate [wo]man above the human sphere into the divine and to assure [her] redemption by making [her] a god[dess] and so conferring immortality upon [her].” The paintings and works-on-paper are the primary tools I utilize to explore my conceptual objectives: the intersection of past and present, the secular and spiritual.
